How Milk Powder Market Is Positioned In Somalia?
The local production in Somalia cannot meet the high demand for safe, fresh milk. The poor state of roads, inadequate cold storage facilities, irregular power supply, improper milk handling, and technological limitations all prevent the milk from ever reaching the consumer after its long journey from the farmer to the market. Moreover, the country’s milk industry collapsed in the year 2017 when a devastating drought killed an estimated 6.4 million cows, camels, and goats.
Milk production plummeted to only 25% of the previous year. As a result, people turned to imported powdered milk. Most of the demand-supply gaps of liquid milk requirements for urban consumers were met by importing dry milk powders from countries such as the Middle East and Europe.
There is limited milk production during the dry season, due to the widespread unavailability of water and fodder, and related livestock migration. This creates seasonal milk shortages in markets boosting the sales of imported milk powder. Moreover, milk powder offers the same nutritional value as regular milk, owing to which, it is used in sports nutrition products including nutrition bars and beverages. The increasing demand for these products, driven by growing fitness consciousness, has been catalyzing the concentrated milk market in Somalia in the past few years.
However, Somalia is highly import-dependent for dairy products from countries such as UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kenya and New Zealand as the local production does not meet the demand of fresh milk production, thus they appear to be more vulnerable to the availability and cost of such imports.
Somalia Milk Powder Market Segmentation
By Type (Whole Milk Powder and Skimmed Milk Powder)
The whole milk powder segment dominated the market out of total revenue sales in 2019 due to it being perceived to be the most natural form of processed milk by a large number of consumers.
However, due to it being popular for having less fat content and less overall calories, skimmed milk powder segment is expected to witness the highest CAGR over the forecast period.
Buttermilk powder acts as a substitute to skimmed milk powder and is commonly used for baked goods such as biscuits or cakes, but it is also used for sauces and soups.
By Application (Nutritional Foods, Infant Formula, Confectionaries and Others)
Due to the demand supply gap of fresh liquid milk, majority of the milk powder is reconstituted into liquid milk and is widely used in Somalia because of reduced transport and storage costs. Infant formulas present an appealing alternative to working mothers for their babies as per the convenience and need.
By Distribution Channel (Supermarkets/ Hypermarkets, Mom & Pop Stores and Online)
Supermarkets & Hypermarkets dominated the market with the highest revenue share in 2019.
Majority of the milk powder products sold by these distribution channels are import oriented. Imported milk powder from Middle East and Europe are sold through distributors.
By Type of Market (Organized and Unorganized)
Unorganized sector including local milk vendors, wholesalers, retailers, and producers play a major role in marketing of milk and they dominate the market as most of the traders opt for tax saving methods by illegally importing the milk powder from various countries.
