Insecurity around Permanence of Jobs, Extra time on hands to do things apart from Work and a Sense to be Productive in this new working environment, resulting in higher adoption for Online Skilling Courses: Ken Research

  • COVID-19 cases in India reached a new peak as the country overtook Russia to become the 3rd worst nation to be affected by the pandemic. The cases in the country crossed the 1 million mark in the 3rd week of July 2020.
  • As the pandemic hits the nation severely, private companies in the country have largely implemented a Work from the Home policy for their employees, keeping in mind the safety of their employees. Adapting to work from home has been a challenge for employees and organizations alike.
  • Employees are finding extra time on their hands due to a reduction in travel time and flexibility around work hours. They are utilizing this time by spending it with family, doing household chores, relaxing, upgrading their skill-set, pursuing their hobbies and working on their fitness

Rising Adoption of Online Learning Platforms: With the social distancing norms in place and heightened concerns about health and disease spread across universities and educational institutions, learners are being forced to adopt online learning and training methodologies to up-skill and re-skill themselves.  A lot of corporate organizations as well have migrated to online employee training systems. There has been a massive change towards the positive in the acceptance of online learning as a viable medium of education.

Ed-Tech Firms Capitalizing on High Course Demand: The Ed-Tech space in the country is undergoing a similar phase due to COVID-19, as was the impact of Demonetization on Online Payments and Wallets. Online Learning platforms across space are spending highly on online marketing, user acquisition, content development, product launches, and onboarding new learners, in a bid to capitalize on this golden opportunity for maximizing their revenue.

Working Professionals Online Learning Trends: With pay cuts, lack of appraisals, insecurity around job status and increased competition on switching jobs extremely common across the Indian professional audience, the majority of them are now looking to develop their skill-set through online programs. There has been a shift in the primary learning outcomes targeted by working professionals, with career-oriented goals dominating the reasons why professionals are looking to enroll in online courses. Moreover, with organizations looking to re-skill their existing employees rather than hire a new resource, therefore, professionals are taking up online courses to keep up with the current and upcoming skill-sets required to progress. It was also identified that professionals are willing to spend more on online learning as a consequence of the pandemic if it results in achieving a recognizable certificate and implementable learning benefit.

Analysts at Ken Research in their latest publication “Working Professional & Ed-Tech/University Paradigm Analysis for Online Up-skilling/Re-Skilling Programs during COVID-19 period  observed that the rising awareness towards the importance of upgrading your professional skill-set and a growing acceptance towards online platforms among working professionals is leading to strong growth in the adoption for ed-tech driven professional programs during the COVID-19 situation (March-July). Ed-tech companies are also redrawing their strategic landscapes to capitalize on the growing demand for their products and are experiencing strong results as mapped by their KPIs such as users, engagement, revenues, satisfaction, and others. Ed-tech players in the industry registered a growth of 30-40% in their revenues and about 50-60% in their user bases on a year-on-year period when compared with the 2019 period.
