Medical Education System in Vietnam: Vietnam is a country that lies in the lower and middle class income group. The education program in the country is in two forms; six year integrated and four year graduate program. The educational program involves rotational practice and theoretical classes. This is the most traditional method of teaching the students which covers both practical and theoretical aspects but stems its strength from the theoretical courses. Students pursue the course for medical education straight after the high school and go for the six year integrated course which involves medical science and basic sciences.
Changes in Medical Education: Vietnam follows a traditional system of education and a rigid curriculum but in recent years there have been changes pertaining the system. The schools are working on limiting the number of mandatory course hours devoted to non-medical subjects, such as politics and even the basic sciences. Such time could then be used to teach more contemporary medical topics, such as genetics, molecular medicine, humanities, and mental health. New teaching methods are also being introduced. They are also partnering up with Medical Schools in Countries like Laos and Cambodia.
Bottleneck for the medical education ecosystem: Although the competition is very high, but a major issue with the ecosystem is that there is no regulatory or statutory body controlling and minding the ethics of medical practitioners. Unlike other ASEAN countries that have Medical Councils, Vietnam does not. But in 2021, they have declared that a Medical Council will be incorporated with respect to rules and regulations pertaining to WHO. They are now starting for accreditation of their training programs with ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance. With all these positive changes in Vietnam, we expect to provide quality medical manpower to respond to the regional needs. In addition, the development of a way to objectively assess the quality of medical training in Vietnam such as a national exam of medical graduation is under preparation. Such an exam would allow schools to improve medical education. The medical schools are now training medical doctors of Laos, Cambodia.
COVID Impact on Medical Colleges: Covid-19 has impacted the medical education temporarily. Pandemic forced medical schools in the Vietnam to stop face-to-face learning activities and abruptly shift to an online curriculum. Many colleges faced difficulty in conducting final year exams which has affected the total toll of graduates in 2020. Experts believe that the drop in the numbers is temporary and the system will revive completely in the future.
